What we Do

Orphan Sponsorship

Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries in the world with the total population of more than 120 million (as of 2021).  Different existing literatures indicate that there are an estimated 5 million orphans in Ethiopia who have lost one or both of their parents and with an estimated 600,000 orphans living on the streets. As a result of poverty and famine, 44% of them have stunted development due to poor nutrition and just 40% complete primary school indicating large number of orphan children does not to attend secondary school.

Childhood is the most crucial developmental period in an individual’s lifetime, any damage at this stage can lead to a perpetuation of the cycles of poverty, resulting in intergenerational and/or chronic poverty. Orphans are more likely to live in households with higher dependency ratios, may experience property dispossession, often miss out an opportunities for education, may live in households experiencing food insecurity, and often experience decreased emotional and psychological well-being due to such challenges, and losses (UNICEF, 2006).

The problem of orphans are numerous begins with the absence of love and left without care and support and are vulnerable to shocks and adversity and, consequently, are hardest hit by poverty. Orphan children often face an immediate crisis in the home and meeting their immediate needs is vital to their current well-being but is also critical to their future. The loss of a parent or parents is extremely disruptive for children, and often seriously disadvantages their chances for obtaining basic living needs; food/nutrition, shelter and care, protection, health care, psychosocial support, and education . Financial and material resources are often required to meet most of these needs.

Yetim Children Care Center, therefore, strives to support orphans in education, health care, food/nutrition and psychosocial support that give them relevance in life.

Education

Education breaks generational cycles of poverty by enabling children to gain skills and knowledge for better jobs and access to education is also a strategic development investment. Supporting education of orphan children through strategically designed program intervention is an important component in the social well-being of the children and in reducing poverty by moving the poor out of poverty.

Health Care / Treatment

Inadequate health services coupled with malnutrition, lack of sanitation and hygiene create poor health conditions and are the major causes of high morbidity and mortality among the most vulnerable groups in which the servility of the problem is more reflected on orphan children. Improved health-seeking behavior leads to decreased morbidity and mortality among orphan children.

Psychological Support

There is a global consensus that the best psychosocial care and support for orphan children is through everyday interpersonal interactions that occur in caring relationships in homes, schools, and communities. Such care and support include the love and protection that children receive in family environments, as well as interventions that help children and families cope. Such interventions enable children to form a sense of self-worth and belonging and are essential to learning, developing life skills, participating in society, and having faith in the future.
